A guide to finding pet friendly hotels

Traveling with your pet(s) can add a new dimension of joy and companionship to your adventures or it can make a trip more difficult if you have not planned ahead. Finding the perfect pet-friendly hotel can be a challenging task. From cozy bed-and-breakfasts to luxurious resorts, there are various options available for you and your furry companion. We have been taking long trips with our dogs for about seven years now. Along the way I have learned how to do it better, with some lessons learned the hard way 🙄Here are some factors to consider when searching for a dog-friendly hotel to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

1.Research Your Destination

Before beginning your journey, it's crucial to research the pet-friendliness of your destination. Some cities are more accommodating to pets than others, with parks, pet-friendly restaurants, and attractions that cater to your canine companion. Websites and apps like BringFido, GoPetFriendly, and PetFriendlyTravel can provide valuable information on pet-friendly destinations, helping you plan a trip that both you and your dog will love. What I love about using these websites is that the reviews are by other pet owners who share your concerns, so they are really helpful.

2. Check Hotel Pet Policies

Once you've narrowed down your destination, it's time to dive into the specifics of hotel pet policies. Not all hotels are created equal when it comes to welcoming pets. There are still many hotels that will not allow pets, or who only allow 1 small pet. Look for accommodations that explicitly state they are pet-friendly and provide details on their policies. most hotel search sites allow you to filter results this way. Key considerations include size restrictions, additional fees, and any rules or limitations on leaving pets unattended in the room. There is a huge variation in how much extra ( and it seems to always be extra) you have to pay with pets. I have seen as low as $15 per pet and as high as $75 per pet. Often the travel websites do not say what the fees are, so I have made a habit of calling and finding out.

3. Read Reviews from Pet-owning Travelers

Online reviews are a treasure trove of information, and this holds true when searching for pet-friendly accommodations. Look for reviews from travelers who brought their pets along. They can provide insights into the hotel's true pet-friendliness, highlighting positive experiences and potential challenges. Pay attention to mentions of staff attitudes toward pets, available amenities, and overall comfort for both humans and their furry friends. I have seen hotels advertise that they are pet friendly, but they only have one small patch of grass for a dog to relieve himself and that may be covered in leftover poo. I have started using the satellite image version of Google Maps to actually check out what is around the hotel before booking.

4. Consider Pet Amenities and Services

Top-notch pet-friendly hotels go the extra mile to ensure a pleasant stay for your dog. Look for accommodations that offer pet-friendly amenities, such as designated walking areas, pet-friendly room service, and even on-site pet spas. Some hotels may provide pet beds, bowls, and treats to make your dog feel right at home. These additional services can enhance the overall experience for both you and your pet.

5. Check for Nearby Pet-Friendly Attractions

While the hotel itself is important, it's equally crucial to consider the surrounding area. Look for hotels located near pet-friendly parks, walking trails, or beaches where your dog can stretch their legs and enjoy some outdoor time. Proximity to pet-friendly restaurants and attractions ensures that your furry friend can join you in exploring the local area. Consider that most hotels do not allow you to leave a dog in your room when you are not there. This will really limit what you can do for fun and for meals if you have not chosen the right place.

6. Consider Booking Directly with the Hotel

When you've found the perfect pet-friendly hotel, consider booking directly through the hotel's website or by calling their reservations line. Direct bookings often come with added benefits, such as more flexible cancellation policies and the opportunity to communicate specific requests or questions about bringing your pet. I have even had hotel managers decrease the pet fee when ai have called, or to only charge for one dog when I have both of my dogs with me.

7. Prepare Your Dog for the Stay

To ensure a smooth experience for both you and your pet, it's essential to prepare them for the hotel stay. Bring familiar items, such as your dog's bed, toys, and food bowls, to create a sense of comfort in the new environment. Familiarize your dog with the hotel room and surroundings, and be mindful of their behavior to address any signs of stress or anxiety promptly. Some dogs get very nervous in new places with new smells and they have a hard time settling down. if you start taking them Places for just one night and build from there, you should get used to it and you can lengthen your trips. You can also consider using CBD chews or anti anxiety medications your vet can prescribe.

Traveling with your dog can be a rewarding experience, and finding the right pet-friendly hotel is a crucial part of ensuring a pleasant journey for both you and your furry friend. By conducting thorough research, checking pet policies, reading reviews, and considering amenities, you can find accommodations that cater to your pet's needs while providing a comfortable and enjoyable stay for everyone involved. So, pack your bags, leash up your dog, and embark on a pawsitively fantastic adventure together!
