MY SUPERPOWER: I CAN MAKE PEOPLE (and leashes)DISAPPEAR!

Many pet owners want good photos of their pets, but they think that there is no way for this to happen because their pet is not well behaved or needs to be leashed all the time. This is not an unusual problem for the pet photographer.

I recently shot a couple of beautiful and very friendly shelties. We took some shots at the owner’s home before heading to the Matthew Henson Trail in Silver Spring, Maryland, to allow the dogs to be photographed in a forest setting. These 2 dogs would not sit or stay, perhaps just because they were very excited about a new person and a new place. They could not, therefore, be off leash for even a minute at the park where these shots were taken. The owner tied the leashes together and stayed close to her dogs to make sure they were safe and behaved. I took quite a few photos because the dogs were constantly moving and getting both in focus was a challenge.

When I got the photos off my camera, I first went through them to delete all the out of focus shots or shots where there were other issues and then I begin processing them in a program called Lightroom. When it is time to remove distractions like leashes, sticks, or even a person, I move to Photoshop and work in that program. It is not quick or easy, but it can get me the photo I wanted but couldn’t take under the circumstances.
