Why the location of your photo session with your dog matters!

When it comes to capturing the special bond between you and your dog, the location of your photo session can make a huge difference. The setting not only sets the tone for the images but also influences the comfort and behavior of both you and your pet. If a photo is to reflect your and your pet’s personalities fully, the location should be an important part of the planning.

Why Location Matters

  1. Atmosphere and Aesthetic: The backdrop of your photos is more than just a background—it's an integral part of the story your pictures will tell. Whether you prefer a beautiful green park, a comfortable home setting, or a urban landscape, the location should reflect your style and personality. This choice will set the mood for the session and enhance the overall feel of the photos.

  2. Comfort and Familiarity: Dogs are sensitive beings. A familiar environment can make them feel more at ease, which translates to more natural and relaxed photos. If your dog feels comfortable, they're more likely to behave well and show off their true personality. This is another reason why using a familiar location is a good idea.

  3. Practicality and Accessibility: Consider the accessibility of a location and the amenities that may be needed, such as water, shade, and restroom facilities. This is particularly important if the session is scheduled to last a few hours or if one or more of the family members, canine and human, are unable to walk on certain types of terrain or if they are susceptible to heat or cold.

  4. Safety Considerations: The safety of your dog is paramount. A location should be dog-friendly and free from hazards like sharp objects, toxic plants, or busy roads. A secure, enclosed area might be ideal for dogs that are prone to wandering off. Leash laws should be followed if the sessions is taking place in a public place.

Choosing the Right Location

  1. Natural Settings: Parks, gardens, and nature reserves are popular choices for a reason. They provide a beautiful, natural backdrop that changes with the seasons, offering different colors and textures throughout the year. These locations also allow for plenty of space for your dog to move around and explore, resulting in dynamic and lively photos. Does your family like hiking? Do you often take your dog to a certain park? These are things to consider. Thankfully, here in mid-Maryland we have so many wonderful choices, from the beauty and waterfalls of Patapsco State Park, to local lakes and streams, to manicured gardens. We can even go further for a photo session with planning.

  2. Urban Landscapes: For a more modern and edgy look, consider urban settings such as downtown areas, graffiti walls, or historic buildings. These environments can add an interesting contrast to the natural look of your dog, creating visually striking images. Whether it be graffiti alley in Baltimore, lake front in Columbia, the historic buildings in Annapolis, or the monuments in Washington DC, this area offers many opportunities for gorgeous backdrops for urban sessions.

  3. Home: Sometimes, the best place for a photo session is right at home. This is especially true for dogs that are anxious or have mobility issues. Home sessions can capture the intimate and everyday moments that truly represent your life with your dog. You may choose to have indoor photographs showcasing the comfort and familiarity of your home (and all those memories you made there) or outdoors in your yard or gardens. A trained eye can find nice backgrounds for pictures in these locations.

  4. Beaches and Water: If your dog loves water, a beach or lake can be a fantastic choice. The playful nature of dogs at the beach, with sand and waves, makes for fun and joyful photos. There are a number of pet friendly beaches on mid-Maryland, with some having the Bay Bridge in the background, and others offering nothing but nature. imagine the gorgeous pictures you could get at sunset! Or perhaps you are a family that loves boating and wants some images of your family and dog on the boat in the water: this too can lead to wonderful memories through the photos that capture that experience.

  5. The Studio: If you prefer a classic and timeless look without the distraction of an outdoor background, or if you prefer a calm and contained environment for the session, you may prefer a studio session. My studio is dog friendly, and I have a number of backdrops to fit any family and time or year. If you want to have images with several different backgrounds and different outfits, a studio session may be the best choice.

Preparation for the Session

  1. Scout the Location: After we choose a location, it is a good idea to familiarize your dog with the surroundings if they are new to your dog. By doing this, the dog is more likely to be calm during the session.

  2. Time of Day: Lighting is key in photography. Early morning or late afternoon, known as the golden hours, provide the best natural light, with softer shadows and warmer tones. You may need to re-arrange your schedule to insure that the money invested on the session gets you the images you will enjoy forever.

  3. Weather Considerations: I constantly check the weather forecast and have a backup plan in case of rain or extreme temperatures. If we re shooting out doors, I will often suggest we plan a primary date and a backup date in case it is needed so you can keep both open just in case. Overcast days can actually be great for photography as the clouds diffuse the sunlight, providing even lighting. Snow falling can also make for beautiful photography depending on your comfort level.

  4. Outfits and Accessories: Hood planning when it comes to clothing choices can make a big difference in the final images. For instance, a casual look might suit a park session, while a more polished outfit could be perfect for an urban setting. Think about where we are going and choose clothes that are attractive and fit well and also will allow you to bend over easily or walk on uneven ground. Don't forget to bring your dog's favorite toys, treats, and any accessories you want to include in the photos.depending on locations, outfit changes can be part of the session.

Making the Session Enjoyable

  1. Stay Relaxed: Your dog can pick up on your emotions. Stay calm and positive, and your dog will likely mirror your behavior. Make it a fun and rewarding experience for them. Let me worry about getting the dog to look at the camera. taking your dog for a walk a few hours before a session can help calm your dog as well.

  2. Bring Essentials: Pack water, a bowl, waste bags, and a leash. Having these essentials on hand ensures that you can address your dog's needs and keep them comfortable throughout the session.

  3. Engage Your Dog: I will use your dog’s toys and treats to keep your dog engaged and happy. Interactive elements can make for great candid shots that capture your dog’s true character.

  4. Work with a Professional who knows dog behavior: A photographer experienced with pets will know how to handle any situation that arises. I can guide you on posing, help keep your dog’s attention, and ensure the session runs smoothly. As someone who has had dog family members all her life, I am familiar with behaviors from dogs that indicate that they are anxious or tired, etc. Your dog’s comfort and safety are always first on my mind.
